    Abstract

IEEE 802.22 wireless regional area network (WRAN) has four major backbones, spectrum sensing is one of them. This paper focuses on spectrum sensing and presents a novel spectrum detector for IEEE 802.22 wireless regional area network (WRAN). The proposed model has two sensing detectors, first detector has fixed threshold (FT) based energy detector (ED) for spectrum sensing, if not able to sense the spectrum, then second, carries adaptive double threshold (ADT) based ED tries to detect primary user licensed spectrum. Simulation results indicate that proposed detection scheme has good sensing results and outperforms the cyclostationary based sensing method and adaptive sensing method by 12.9 % and 15 % at - 8 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) respectively. The proposed scheme not only has better detection results but also has lesser sensing time than cyclostationary detection and adaptive SS scheme in the order of 5 ms and 0.8 ms at - 20 dB SNR respectively. Further, to avoid hidden terminal problem, shadowing & fading effects we introduce proposed scheme with collaborative spectrum sensing (CSS) scheme. In CSS scheme, all cognitive radios (CR) work together by using proposed scheme in order to identify PU licensed spectrum. Numerical results show that proposed scheme with CSS achieves spectrum detection performance in the order of 0.9 as given by IEEE 802.22 for SNR value of as low as – 17.5 dB.
